The aim is to enable every resident to retain their personal freedom and enjoy the support that they need, without surrendering their privacy and quality of life and by being members of an active and respectful community. Assisted living is suitable for people who are able to function independently, but seek peace of mind and security in a rich and containing social setting.
The difference between assisted living and a nursing home
The main difference between assisted living and a nursing home is in the residents’ independence and the nature of services provided. Assisted living is intended for third age seniors who function independently or almost independently, who seek to live in a supportive, social and safe environment while maintaining an active and free lifestyle. The residents live in private apartments in a compound offering complementary services, such as security, basic medical services, cultural activities, cleaning and maintenance, but do not require nursing care. On the other hand, a nursing home is usually intended for third age seniors who have trouble with daily activities and require assistance with basic functions, such as bathing, eating or mobility. In nursing homes, residents are provided with nursing, medical or complex nursing care according to their medical condition, where the emphasis is placed more on ongoing medical and nursing support and less on independence or an active lifestyle. It is important to understand that these are two completely different facilities, each suitable to a different stage in life and different needs.
